Hocus Pocus Party

Sanderson sisters reunited at last!  It’s time to celebrate with a spooky sweet Hocus Pocus Party!

After 29 long years it is time at last to light the black flame candle again.

Hocus Pocus 2 premiered on Disney+ just a few days ago!

I’ve always sort of thought of myself as the 4th Sanderson sister, so when the sequel to one of my favorite ever movies was announced, I knew it was my time to shine!

I called up a few friends and told them their attendance at our Hocus Pocus Premiere Party was requested.  I promised lots of cute snacks and decorations, and  a big cozy sectional to get comfy on and watch the movie.

And on September 29th we gathered, as the Sanderson sisters coven once more emerged on our television screen.

True to its namesake, the whole night was just a bunch of Hocus Pocus!

Hocus Pocus Party Ideas

While these ideas were originally used for a movie party, they’d also work great for a Hocus Pocus birthday party, or even a Hocus Pocus Halloween party.

I’ve also included some free printables and SVGs, so be sure to read on to grab those!

I had these adorable spiral paper fans I used for a Halloween Party with Party City a few years ago.  I saved them in a trash bag in a closet because I knew they’d come in handy one day.

Sure enough, I found some adorable Hocus Pocus clip art from Etsy and created some center pieces to match the theme.  I cut some scrapbook paper in a circle and then placed my designs on a smaller circle and loved the results.

I grabbed these candles in a two pack from the Dollar Spot at Target.  The SVG was an Etsy find and I modified it slightly because my Silhouette had difficulty with the smaller font.

I also found this cute potion bottle in the Dollar Spot.  It actually has a snake design on the other side and it lights up so the snake glows, but I thought it was perfect for one of the ingredients for the Witches Brew.

The large, “I smell children” sign was a DIY project from several years ago.  You can find the free SVG for that, along with several other cute Halloween craft ideas here.

I grabbed two small chalkboard from the Dollar Tree to make two smaller signs.  These were a quick and easy Silhouette project that added alot of fun to the party!  If you’d like these SVG files you can find them here

I made the banner with some blank pendants I grabbed on Halloween clearance from Target a few years ago.  Making it was simple, I just cut some white vinyl and placed it on each pendant.  It turned out even cuter than I could’ve imagined!

The rest of the party decorations were things I picked up at Dollar Tree and Dollar General.  Dollar Tree had these adorable light up pumpkins that were the perfect accent!  This cute witch lantern was at Dollar General for just $5.

Even the Sanderson sisters would appreciate deals that good!

Hocus Pocus Party Food

I had so much fun with the food on this one!  I had more cute ideas than money.  I’m a champagne kind of girl on a Bud Light budget so without some real magic I had to reign myself in.

I did create some super cute food tents to introduce our spooky sweet treats.  Read on to grab those for free!

For our sweet treats I made Spellbook brownies.  These are certainly far from Pinterest perfection but turned out really cute.  The kids loved them.

My Walmart only had these bloody eyes in stock, so Spellbook Brownies became either a little spookier or suspect of partaking in some “extra-curriculars” depending on who you asked.

I also added some Twizzler’s to represent Sarah’s lucky rat tails.  I found chocolate along with the regular flavor so I added some of those as well.

Another sweet treat was some Monster Mash caramel popcorn I found at Walmart.  The colors were perfect and I couldn’t resist adding them to the menu.

Because I don’t think any party is complete without a little cheese, I whipped up these cute and simple witches broomsticks.  Assembling these was super easy.  You just split a cheese stick into three sections and  then cut the bottom 2/3s to make them resemble the straw on a broom.

Once you’ve done that, you just pop in a pretzel stick and voila!  Witch transportation on a plate!

Another party favorite were the Dead Man’s toes.  These were simple little treats of hot dogs cut in half with part of a crescent roll around the bottom.  We added cuts to look like knuckles.

I’d originally planned to add toenails but ran out of time. Still these were a party favorite and didn’t last long!

I also popped some extra buttery popcorn because what movie party could be complete

And because I had to have at least one healthy item on the menu I added grapes as stand ins for the Eye of Newt.

For beverages I whipped up a Witches Brew potion in the form of fruit punch.  I intended for it to be a spooky green but supply chain seems to dictate that the only sherbert in the grocery store is rainbow colored.  Still it was delicious and my girls asked when we could make it again.

I’ve added my recipe above so you can grab and save if you’re interested.  This punch will probably make an encore appearance at my girls birthday party this year!

I also added some plain water as an ode to one of my favorite quotes from the movie. When Max triggers the “Burning Rain of Death” with a lighter and the sisters all panic.  It’s enough to buy time for his escape after which Winnie proclaims, “It is but water!”

Days before the party, I spotted this gem going around on Facebook and knew we had to re-create it, so for decorative purposes I added ice so we could just this sign.

If you’d like to grab my food tents for your own party, you can find them here!

I scored most of the serving bowls and plates at the Dollar Tree.  They had the cutest Halloween stuff this year!

For plates, cups, and popcorn boxes, I slapped on some simple Sanderson sister decals.  This was a super quick hack to create cute accessories for cheap!

Hocus Pocus 2 Review

As luck would have it, the Sanderson Sisters also seemed to summon Hurricane Ian from the depths of hell.  We were heartbroken watching the news and seeing the destruction, but very thankful we were spared from the worst of Ian’s wrath.

We had one pretty intense night of heavy rain and wind that knocked the power out for two days, but no property damage and our loved ones all stayed safe.  In the grand scheme of things, power was a minor annoyance.

Our party actually started with just the generator going and the Sanderson sisters must have sent a little magic our way because just as we were getting ready to start the movie, the power came back on!  It was still a little chilly but we all piled in on the sectional and used blankets and snuggles from the kiddos to keep us warm.

The movie kept the kids attention for approximately 10 minutes and then they were off to play.  Us Moms left them to their devices and enjoyed the movie.  I thought it was cute, but it couldn’t compare to the original.  Still the dialogue was fun and there were lots of cute puns throughout that had us chuckling.

The dreaded – What’s a Virgin?

Another Mom friend asked me later if the movie was appropriate for kids and how the use of the word virgin was handled in this one.  While it did come up an uncomfortable amount of times, Disney half heartedly attempted to save parents from the question, “What’s a virgin?” when a character asked it in the movie.

The quick and simple answer they gave was that “A virgin is someone who hasn’t lit a candle yet.” It seemed to satisfy our audience and for that we were thankful.

We will definitely watch this one again, but I doubt it will become the Halloween staple the first has. It’s just hard to improve on a classic.

Still, we all had a lot of fun and thoroughly enjoyed our Hocus Pocus party.  It was the perfect segway to fall and Halloween’s impending arrival!
