If you’re like me, your thumb is so NOT green, it’s practically black.
Therefore, keeping any plants alive is problematic. Since plants are a decor staple in most households, this can make dressing up your home’s vibe a little difficult.
However, all is not lost. There are in fact options that can make your home look super cute, all while not requesting much in exchange from you. It’s the ultimate porch hack and it’s so easy!
Instead of buying plants seasonally to torture and kill, just invest in some nice faux flowers!
This fun little project took me about 15 minutes and I’m THRILLED with the results. The best part? Aside from maybe dusting them off and switching them out seasonally, I’ve done all I have to for these beauties!
I want everyone to have planters as cute as this, green thumbs or not! So I created this super quick and easy DIY faux outdoor planter tutorial to share.
DIY FAUX OUTDOOR PLANTER
This project was pretty reasonably priced considering the cost of plants from a nursery. Each planter cost me between $35-$40. I picked up almost all my materials at Hobby Lobby, except for the soil and rocks which I had on hand. The planters and flowers were both half off at the time which helped keep my cost down. Craftiness Level (0-10): 2
Time Investment: 15 minutes
Materials:
- planter
- 7-8 faux flower stems (or as many as you’d like)
- floral foam block
- dirt
- rocks (can potentially skip if not prone to being knocked over)

Step 1: Fill your Planter
For this step I chose to use both rocks and soil. I have a large dog and two young girls who are both equally rambunctious. I didn’t want to make this anything that was easily knocked over so I decided to weigh it down.
The soil actually serves a dual purpose. It gives the planter weight, while also making the flowers look more realistic. Most people won’t examine your flowers closely, but if they do the appearance of dirt actually gives the illusion that your faux flowers are not indeed fake!
Step 2: Add Foam Block and Arrange Flowers
Next you will just plop down a foam block and get to work! I have a friend who loves to arrange flowers. She told me once to build an arrangement from the tallest flower out. In fresh flowers she tries to create a grid to help flowers stay in place.
While this is not necessary due to the floral foam block, I do try to visualize a grid of sorts to keep flowers well distributed and aligned. I love to throw greens in randomly around the flowers to give the feeling of volume.
Step 3: Add some more Dirt and Voila!
Finally, just toss some more dirt on top and just like that you’re all done! Set those beauties on the porch and admire them for months to come. Doesn’t get much easier than that!
I plan to switch mine up a couple times a year and coordinate colors seasonally. It will be as easy as pulling them up and popping some new ones in.
Cute porch vibes all year long!
