Step 1: Create (or import) your design

Work up a design in Silhouette Studio or import one you wish to use. If you wish to use my design you can find it here. If you choose to create your own design, I recommend using thicker, bolder fonts if you can. These magnets are small, and weeding small, thin designs, can be a bit of a chore. Of course these don’t have to be Mother’s Day designs. The possibilities are endless. I am also working on a farmhouse set for my shop.

Step 2: Cut & weed your design

Since we are using HTV for this tutorial, you will need to make sure you place your material shiny side DOWN on your cutting mat. (If you do not have HTV you can use 651 following the steps I listed in this tutorial) Check your settings in your machine and make sure they are correct. I find HTV to be a little difficult for my machine to cut smoothly, so I have to adjust mine a bit. Be sure to weld your design if necessary. Also, since you are cutting HTV be sure to mirror your design! After cutting, you will need to carefully weed your design. As I have mentioned in previous tutorials, I often use a razor to create lines in between text to make it easier to weed (if you upgrade to Business Edition with the Silhouette Studio design software.

Step 3: Adhere your design and press

Make sure your iron is turned on to the highest setting. Once your design has been weeded, you will need to center it on the canvas, transfer sheet up. When you use the canvas magnets with wood frame inside (versus canvas panels), you will need to put a paper towel or napkin inside the frame to make sure the pressure is even over the whole surface. Once prepared the canvas, you will need to place a teflon sheet over the clear transfer sheet. You then need to press down hard with your iron on top of the transfer sheet for 10-15 seconds. Do not move the iron while pressing or your vinyl may warp. I press down in different spots a couple of times to make sure it is on there completely. Once it has adhered, pull off the transfer sheet.

Step 4: Add magnetic strips to the back

I bought a roll of magnet tape and just cut it into small strips. I found it pretty easy to cut with scissors. It has an adhesive strip on the back so you can easily attach it to the canvases!

It’s easy peasy y’all!! These canvas magnets are so fun and versatile. I can’t stop making them! Our fridge is headed towards becoming a canvas magnet art gallery!

This is but one of many mother’s day ideas to come! Stay tuned as I will be offering other ideas, as well as round ups of some of the best the internet has to offer!
