Today’s free themed lesson plan, is one of my favorites!
I have always loved teaching about butterflies and found a way to work them in to practically every grade I taught.
I’m just fascinated by a butterflies metamorphosis and all it can represent. I love raising caterpillars and the look of wonder on a child’s face when they see them emerge from a cocoon. It never gets old.
So I rounded up some of the cutest crafts and the funnest activities on the interwebs for a super fun week spent learning about these amazing creatures!
In case you’ve somehow missed it, I’ve been taking part in a 10 Day series with a bunch of other education bloggers. They are also sharing a ton of freebies! I’ve got 10 Days worth of lesson plans done for you, so be sure to check it out.

Quick Note
Before jumping into my lesson plans, I want to share with you something we do with this unit that is my favorite activity ever! This is the first activity listed in my plans this week. It also costs money, but in my opinion it is so worth it.
What is this activity you ask?
Raising butterflies!
For about $20 on Amazon, you can buy a kit with live caterpillars and watch as they grow from tiny little caterpillars to big, fat caterpillars and then amazingly transform into butterflies!
I’ve done this at least a dozen times and never find it any less fascinating! We do a butterfly release at the end of each one and sometimes, the butterflies are slightly stunned by the sudden expansion of their world and will just sit quietly on your hand before they fly away!

It’s so incredible, I could write a whole blog post about it. Instead I’ll just share a link to the kit I use below. Once you have the house, you can buy refill kits for around $10
Preschool Books about Butterflies
As always there are tons of super cute books to choose from. Some of my favorites in this week’s plans are The Very Hungry Caterpillar and A Butterfly is Patient.
You should be able to grab these books at your local library but if not, you can also usually find them really cheap on Amazon also!
